Wayne Phillips
Former Australian Test Cricketer & Radio Presenter
Wayne Phillips is a former Australian Test cricketer and entertaining storyteller. He played 27 Test matches and 48 One Day Internationals for Australia between 1982 and 1986. He also represented South Australia in a first-class career that spanned more than a decade, from 1978 to 1991.
Wayne’s international career began in memorable fashion. He scored a commanding 159 against Pakistan in Perth on Test debut. That innings made him only the fourteenth Australian in Test history to compile a century on debut.
A talented and stylish batsman, he also balanced the demanding dual role of wicketkeeper at the highest level. As a result, he gained a unique perspective on the pressures and pleasures of representing Australia, playing alongside some of the country’s most celebrated cricketers.
Sir Richard Hadlee was voted the New Zealand Sportsperson of the Decade 1987 for his contribution to cricket. He took 431 test wickets, played 86 test matches and 115 one-day internationals and had a Test Bowling Average of 22.29.
Aptly described as “The Master of Rhythm and Swing”, Sir Richard Hadlee is one of New Zealand’s greatest cricketers. He competed with Ian Botham, Kapil Dev and Imran Khan for recognition as best all-rounder in the world during the 1980’s. He has acknowledged Dennis Lillee as his great role model and recognition as the greatest fast bowler ever.
Sir Richard retired from international cricket in 1990 after capturing a wicket off the last ball he bowled in test cricket. He was knighted for services to cricket while still playing the game.
