I've created this page because I want to make a difference.
Looking back, turning 50 in 2007 was a significant point in my life. My mother Shirley had battled bowel cancer for several years and with other family members affected by the disease, she pestered me to have a checkup. Her intuition proved correct with a colonoscopy detecting a tumour. Stage 3 Bowel Cancer changed my life.
I had surgery to remove the tumour in May 2007 followed by six months of chemotherapy. My mother passed away on the morning of my 11th treatment, leaving me with so much to thank her for.
Early detection proved to be a godsend though.
I believe in ‘Paying it Forward’. Before 2007 medical people, through research, gradually improved the survival rate of Bowel Cancer patients. I am walking the Portuguese Camino to raise awareness of the impact that Bowel Cancer is having on modern society. The average age of Bowel Cancer detection especially in Western Countries like Australia is decreasing. It is now the leading Cancer killer in people aged 25 – 49 in Australia.
Sharing my story, doing voluntary work for The Jodi Lee Foundation and getting involved in the JLF Treks and other JLF activities is my way of saying thank you to my mother for saving my life.
I’m also walking the Camino to acknowledge the importance of daily exercise in our life.
I would love your support to reach my fundraising goal.
